  • Guggenheim Teen Volunteers
    • Description: Assist adult staff and volunteers in our weekend Family Programs. Assignments include being a liaison for families in the lobby at our Family Programs and facilitating gallery activities in our Just Drop In programs.

  • Recycle-A-Bicycle Youth Program
    • Description: Recycle-A-Bicycle recognizes the bicycle as a resource to foster self-assurance and creativity among young people. We teach basic bicycle mechanics and repair, promote environmental stewardship, run a youth ride club, and lead workshops on recycled arts. Many of our students also participate in community events and projects, including volunteering as mechanics and marshals at benefit rides, refurbishing children's bicycles for local charities and Kids Bike Swaps, and participating in bike rides and environmentally-focused events. Many of our youth participants go on to work in one of our stores or in bike shops throughout the city.

  • Groundswell
    • Description: Groundswell pairs NYC youth with professional artists and community-based organizations to research, design and fabricate large-scale social justice themed murals throughout the five boroughs. All of our youth are paid a stipend for their participation and there are no artistic skill requirements to participate. Youth work on one of two teams on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, October-May, from 4pm-7pm at our Park Slope studios. For youth who are considering applying to an arts-based undergraduate program, we offer a Portfolio Development program. Youth are paid a materials and transportation stipend and work under a professional artist to put together a portfolio for college application. Portfolio runs in two semesters, Fall and Spring, on Mondays from 4pm-7pm at our studio. Finally, we employ over 100 NYC youth in multiple teams around NYC during the summer to make murals as a summer jobs program through NYC's Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP).

  • 35th Annual Multicultural Recruitment Day Conference entitled "Medical School: Challenges and Opportunities."  Columbia University
    • When: Saturday, April 6, 2013 from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
    • Where: the Alumni Auditorium on the 1st floor of the Black Building. The Auditorium is located at 650 West 168th Street at Ft. Washington Avenue in Manhattan. A campus map can be accessed at: http://www.cumc.columbia.edu/about/cumc_map.html  
    • Description: This conference is for underrepresented and disadvantaged premedical high school students with pertinent information about medical school. The Office of Diversity at Columbia University, College of Physicians & Surgeons is sponsoring the 35th Annual Multicultural Recruitment Day
    • Important Dates: Free and a continental breakfast will be provided.  The program will take place on Saturday, April 6, 2013 from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

  • Prospect Park Zoo Volunteer Program
    • Description: The Prospect Park Zoo offers two ways to volunteer. As a teen Discovery Guide, you'll answer questions about animals, direct visitors around the zoo, help out at special events and run children's activities. The Discovery Guide program is for teenagers and college students.
    • Discovery Guides help to maintain a friendly atmosphere for zoo visitors by interpreting animal exhibit areas, assisting with birthday parties and special events, and conducting research projects. Zoo internships can satisfy school community service hours, which can be applied toward school credit (check with your school), provide an introduction to careers in the animal field, or be a satisfying part of a summer vacation. 
    • Important Dates: We are currently accepting applications for the Spring and Summer 2013 season. Please complete the following application. The deadline for Spring is January 4 and the Summer deadline is April 1. Spring training dates are February 17, 18, and 19, 2013. Summer training dates are June 27, 28, July 1, 2, and 3, 2013.

  •  Youth Bridge
    • Description: Do You Know of a 10th Grade Student Interested in Diversity and Issues Affecting NYC? Meet with influential NYC leaders! Stand up for issues affecting YOU! Become a change agent in the community! Develop professional skills through leadership trainings! Be part of an elite cohort of diverse student leaders!

  • Teen Career Connection (Current Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors in High School)
    • Description: Teen Career Connection, the West Side Y summer internship program, provides teens with life-changing work experiences at top New York City companies and nonprofit organizations. Now in its 9th year, the 8-week summer program gives students the opportunity to explore exciting career paths, make new connections, and build a network of professional adults that they would not have the ability to make on their own. After 2 weeks of training led by industry professionals and staff at the West Side Y, the students spend 6 weeks in their placements gaining an understanding of the profession and what it means to have the responsibility of a full time job in New York City.

  • New York University College Access Leadership Institute 
    • Description: The third annual New York University College Access Leadership Institute (NYU CALI) is designed to demystify the often daunting college admissions process. This five-day program will include workshops and small group sessions on a variety of topics:
      • college admissions
      • college entrance test preparation
      • essay and resume writing
      • interviewing and presentation skills
      • financial aid literacy
    • Program graduates will be certified College Access Ambassadors and will be required to act as mentors and advisers in their respective high schools by conducting their very own college application workshop. Successful applicants to the NYU CALI program come from underrepresented communities and are academically strong high school students from the New York metro/tri-state area. Successful applicants to the program also demonstrate exceptional leadership abilities within their schools and communities. If selected, students are awarded a full scholarship to the institute, and they are only expected to cover travel expenses to and from the NYU campus. Space in NYU CALI is limited, so please submit your application as soon as possible!

  • Brooklyn Summer HEAT (Help Employ Ambitious Teens)
    • Brooklyn Summer HEAT (Help Employ Ambitious Teens) is Borough President Marty Markowitz' summer youth employment program. In the last few years, hundreds of teens between the ages of 16 and 18 have been hired through HEAT.  Students must be 16 by July 5th.
    • Important Dates: Deadline for application is Tuesday, March 15th.
    • Application Process: Applicants must submit a copy of: a resume, a transcript, a letter of recommendation, and a typed one page essay focusing on "How will their participation in the Summer HEAT program enhance their personal development?" Applications are available in my office or online  www.brooklyn-usa.org/pages/Summer_Heat/summerheat_employer.htm

  • Sadie Nash Leadership Project
    • Description: During our Summer Institute, we bring together dynamic young women leaders like you to share ideas, reflect on experiences, meet amazing role models, and to help transform your community through direct action. We are currently recruiting a strong group of traditional and non-traditional female leaders to join the Sadie Nash Leadership Project for the 2011 Summer Institute. If you are receiving these materials, you should be honored; it is because you are already a leader in your own right.
    • Enclosed are materials on the Sadie Nash Leadership Project. By joining SNLP, you will be a part of the leadership of an organization that supports the leadership of young women. You will make your ideas into realities. You will be a part of creating a space where young women can learn from each other. You will lead. We will invite a group of approximately 35 young women from New York City high schools who are interested in social activism and leadership to participate in the program this summer.
    • Application Process: The application process is a way we can get to know you, make sure Sadie Nash Leadership Project can meet your needs and therefore help you reach your potential as a leader. We are looking for young women who are both traditional and non-traditional leaders, and for young women who want an experience like the Sadie Nash Leadership Project.
